Fall Throwback: The Return of the Martens

Return of the Martens

No, you haven’t jumped aboard a time machine, it’s throw-back-fall, everything old is new again, and Dr Martens are stomping their way down city streets just about everywhere. The main difference between Martens now and the circa 1990? We’re wearing them a la couture baby! The popular brand actually made it’s major comeback last year, however it was  localized in the UK and European market, which of course means that the average North American fashionista was the last to catch on. Just once it’d be nice if we lead the charge with a respectable trend that didn’t include over-priced stretchy pants (don’t make me say the name out loud) or a bastardized version of hideous slippers (UGG Boots – ick!).
If you’re old enough to remember, Dr Martens came to be in 1960 on the cusp of the ‘Mod’ era, and rock icons like The Who’s Peter Townsend endorsed the design, claiming he went to bed on his tours with “a cognac bottle and a Dr Martens boot.” The boot was scooped up by the Britsh skinhead ska scenesters and later became somewhat of a right of passage for angsty adolescents in the rock scene. The signature yellow stitching, rounded toe, substantial sole and distinctive eyelets, once only donned by goths, rockers, skinheads, or those who wanted to intentionally appear marginalized or disenchanted with ‘the man‘, have seeped into the mainstream, and like any brand who wants staying power, has created, regenerated, innovated and elevated the Dr Marten name so well, even super models are rocking them!

So what’s so great about them? Well first, they’re practically indestructible, and while we live in this embarrassing ‘Age of Disposal’ as I like to call it, having something in your wardrobe that you could run over with a truck and have it come out looking the same on the other side is pretty remarkable (no, don’t do it). Not only can they withstand the trials of everyday wear and tear like nothing else, they’re so darn comfortable, you’ll forget you’re wearing them. Sure, Louboutins are to-die-for, but there’s no risk of teetering around like a drunken giraffe in a trusty pair of Dr Martens. Not that you should be pairing your cocktail dress with Martens…hmmm, now there’s a look! And lastly, and you’re going to have to trust me on this one, there are so few shoes in your collection that have the versatility that these do. You’ll see here I’ve paired them with an adorable tartan skirt and classic blazer, a great collegiate look for fall. And for a day-t0-night transitional ensemble, try something like the second set. Swap out the denim jacket for a fitted moto-crop and give your look a little more edge.

The last point I want to make about them, is that they’re the ultimate all-season shoe, which for a Canadian like myself, lends huge appeal. I know the rest of the world thinks we go to work in dog sleds (well, some of us do) and live in snow shelters all year long (some of us do that too), West Coaster’s like myself who live in a temperate rain forest (no dogsled or snow shelter needed) are always on the hunt for stylish waterproofed kicks. I get mine from Dr Martens Industrial and, if you’ve got some extra pocket change, snag yourself a pair in more than one colour, it’s always great to have options!
