Leya (Nikon D80)

If you’ve been reading my blog over the years, you know I have a special place in my heart for the Africa Lion. I volunteered as a researcher with the African Lion Environmental Research Trust a few years back (read more about my experience here) alongside a pride of ten male and female cubs. Their ages ranged from 12-16 months and though I loved them all, I always felt Leya was the most mysterious. She was quiet, graceful, a calculated hunter and wise beyond her years. It was hard not to fall in love with her wild spirit. I’ve chosen this lioness as the Photo of the Day in honour of the highly successful Dambwa Release Pride, and as a tribute to the species, which was recently placed on the endangered species list.
