Have you ever picked up a set of knitting needles? A few years back, there was no way I could ever conceive of sitting in one place long enough to knit something even slightly recognizable. It’s not that I didn’t have the patience for it, I’ve been known to spend something like sixteen hours braiding my hair (in my pre-university days), but braiding hair and knitting a sweater were two very different things. I had always thought that I lacked the imagination to create something beautiful, however, an unexpected opportunity presented itself.
While spending Christmas in England a few of years back, my family and I were all sitting around a warm fire, yukking it up over some holiday flick, and my mother-in-law was knitting a fabulous scarf. I had no idea that she was an accomplished knitter, and I was fascinated both at the speed of which she was knitting, as well as the design. After a brief discussion over the perceived difficulty of knitting, and her project in particular, the very next day, she had us marching off to the local wool shop to hunt around for a pattern she thought I would like. Within 24 hours, I was gingerly making my foray into the world of knitting and before I knew it, this beautiful Sirdar sweater pictured above, began to take shape on my newly purchased knitting needles!
Right. So that was almost three years ago. And this is as far as I got. I’m almost ashamed to admit that it’s taken me nearly three years to knit one half of a sweater, and admittedly, misery loves company, so if you’re one of those people with an unfinished knitting project from seasons ago, drop me a comment. I have decided to make a public promise to finish my sweater by Christmas of this year. I’m not a total lost cause. I have managed to whip up a number of scarves over the years, nothing too complicated, but all pieces that I’ve either given away as gifts or incorporated into my essential winter wardrobe. But I’m desperate to move beyond scarves. I have a stack of fantastic knitting books taunting me in my office, with hundreds of amazing patterns that I’m dying to try out. It’s just all a matter of finding the time in between research papers, reading assignments and blogging.
So, what knitting projects do you have on the go? Do you have pics? Where do you get your patterns from? Don’t forget to leave comments below with your blog so we can all check out your masterpieces!
